Why Are Certain Roads and Intersections in Miami So Dangerous?
Accidents are more likely to occur on roadways with heavier congestion and higher traffic speeds. Additionally, more frequent merging and more instances of aggressive or distracted driving significantly increase the risk of accidents on a given roadway.
Proximity to schools, shopping centers, and tourist attractions also increases the risk to pedestrians and cyclists, as the proximity means increased encounters with motor vehicles. Tourist-heavy areas like Miami Beach, for example, see more pedestrian-involved wrecks.
Several other factors, such as confusing layouts, poor signal timing, and inadequate signage, can contribute to the likelihood of a collision.
The Most Dangerous Roads in Miami-Dade County
There are several dangerous roadways in Miami-Dade County that require heightened vigilance while navigating.
Interstate 95 (I-95) from downtown to North Miami Beach
high volume of traffic, rapid lane changes, and frequent collisions. ABC News named it the deadliest highway in the United States, with 35,766 auto collisions in 2020 alone.
Palmetto Expressway (SR 826)
This road is known for heavy commuter traffic, sudden stops, and multi-vehicle pileups. In January 2025, there was one fatality after a car crash on SR 826 in Miami Gardens. Similarly, in June 2023, a driver was killed in a 4-car crash.
Dolphin Expressway (SR 836)
This road is common for high speeds and complex interchanges. In May 2022, three women died, and two men were hospitalized after losing control of their vehicle on SR 836. In another case, back in February 2023, the exit from southbound LeJeune Road to westbound State Road 836 closed temporarily after an overnight crash killed two people.
Florida’s Turnpike
The turnpike has hazards between Homestead Extension and Miramar Parkway. The accident rate fluctuates between 39 and 62 per 100 million vehicle miles of travel. In one case in April 2025, five people were killed and seven injured after a crash on Florida’s Turnpike.
US-1 (South Dixie Highway)
This road is dangerous, especially at SW 152nd Street, where commercial and residential traffic mix. In December 2024, a man died after being ejected from a box truck that crashed into an SUV. In addition, there were seven pedestrian deaths on Dixie Highway in 2019.

NW 36th St and NW 72nd Ave

How Dangerous Roads Impact Crash Risks & Legal Claims in Miami
Hotspots on these dangerous roads lead to more frequent and severe accidents, including multi-vehicle pileups and pedestrian collisions. It is important to note that a crash’s location and type can affect a legal claim. For example, when a wreck occurs in a construction zone, this can impact laws on liability. Similarly, multi-vehicle collisions can involve more than one at-fault driver.
Florida law changes also affect a personal injury claim. As of March 24, 2023, House Bill 837 introduced significant changes to the statute of limitations and comparative negligence rule. Under this, parties who sustain a personal injury after the date it went into effect have two years to file a claim instead of the former four-year deadline.
Additionally, the state no longer follows a pure comparative negligence system. It is now under a modified comparative negligence model. This means a plaintiff is barred from recovering damages entirely if found to be more than 50% at fault.
