Suing For A Faulty Shopping Cart In Florida

Believe it or not, a trip to the local grocery store can result in serious injuries. There may be many hazards that you’re completely unaware of. That wet floor could send you flying to the ground, causing a severe brain injury that leads to personality changes, speech impediments, and life-altering disabilities. But what about a shopping cart? Surely this innocuous object couldn’t possibly cause serious injuries? Unfortunately, a woman from West Palm Beach recently discovered that shopping carts might not be as harmless as they seem at first glance.

Woman Sues Walgreens for Dangerous Shopping Cart

On January 23rd of 2023, it was reported that a woman from West Palm Beach had sued Walgreens, seeking a total of $50,000 for an injury she claims was caused by a faulty shopping cart. According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff was shopping at Walgreens in 2019 when her shopping cart’s wheels suddenly locked up, causing her to stumble. The woman tried to regain her balance but failed, ultimately falling to the ground and suffering injuries.

The exact nature of these injuries was not revealed in the article, but the plaintiff claims that she has suffered pain and suffering, disfigurement, mental anguish, loss of enjoyment of life, and much more. She also claims to have racked up quite the hospital bill, and apparently the injury aggravated a pre-existing condition. Her lawyer claims that the grocery store had a duty to properly maintain the shopping carts to ensure they were safe for use. If this lawsuit ends in success for the plaintiff, it would represent a rare slip and fall injury caused by a shopping cart and not a spill.

Shopping Carts Aren’t the Only Items That Hide Threats

There are many other examples of seemingly-innocuous items hiding serious safety hazards. For example, on January 17th it was reported that the manufacturer Bisell had recalled numerous vacuum cleaners due to apparent fire hazards. At least one injury was reportedly caused by these faulty vacuum cleaners, while at least three fires caused serious property damage. No lawsuits have been filed as of yet, but that situation could change soon. Many of these vacuum cleaners are still in use today, and it may be only a matter of time until a house catches fire – or worse.
