The state of Florida has strict laws when it comes to helmets. Noshua and  Payer Law is here to help you understand what their laws are and how they affect you. What’s the Law?

You may notice while out riding that many individuals don’t sport helmets when they are out on their bikes. Some of them are breaking the law. We will break it down for you.

Under Florida law, riders that are over the age of 21 who carry at least $10,000 in medical insurance are not required to wear a helmet. Everyone else, however, must wear a helmet at all times while riding in a motorcycle. Florida, and Michigan, is one of the only states that require medical coverage.

Helmet Laws Are Important

In the past, Florida actually repealed its law. Because of this, the number of riders who were killed nearly tripled. Keep in mind that these individuals were still legally required to wear a helmet. This meant that hospitalization increased by 40 percent. The cost of treating head injuries more than doubled. It ranges from around $44 million.

Only 1 in 4 riders that were hospitalized had medical bills that were less than $10,000, which is the amount that the law requires to ride helmetless. Helmet use has dropped from 99 percent to 53 percent a year after the appeal.

Helmets Save Lives

Chest injuries and head injuries remain the most common type of fatal injuries coming from motorcycle collisions in the United States. You see it on the news all the time. Whenever there is a devastating car accident that leads to a fatality, it usually involved a cyclist. Imagine if that individual wasn’t wearing a helmet. Maybe this death could have been avoided.

Keep in mind that just because you may be a good motorcyclist, does not ensure that those driving bigger vehicles are used to driving around motorcycles. Some big trucks and semi never even notice when a cycle passes their blind spots. They can easily strike you due to their negligence. A motorcycle accident attorney can assist you if this situation ever happens.
